Rantz's 10th Muse Colored

It had been quite some time since I had done any digital paintings or even sketches for that matter. But recently, I had stumbled across MyPaint that focuses on just creating digtial paintings.

I just wanted to try it out and hence I picked up a high resolution line art provided by rantz at deviantART who has got quite a unique style of drawing characters.

I created flats in GIMP (using the guide by rantz) and then went about painting it in MyPaint. It took a bit of time for me to get a hang of it, but here is the result of doodling in it for about two hours.

MyPaint is not a complete solution for your graphics needs. It will not be able to serve all of your workflow. But it is specifically designed to be a tool to emulate traditional media and that is what I believe is required for a digital painter.

Note that MyPaint is meant to be worked with a graphics tablet.

Sorceress

Sorceress - Work In Progress

It had been a long time since I started working (or should I say reworking) on the Armem Enlom comics. Working on the comics, since it included a lot of fight scenes, I had to study a bit of human anatomy.

Just to check if I was getting any better at doing human anatomy, I picked up this unnamed sorceress from the same realm as Armem Enlom (which is Chaos And Order, by the way).

This is a "work in progress" snapshot of the artwork. I did go through a lot of images on the web, but I would like to make a nod to one of the artists I have been following at deviantART. In particular, her artwork, titled "Mekania" inspired the costume of this particular character.

Self Portrait - 2nd attempt

I used a photo my friend had taken a year back as reference. But I did change a lot of things in this second portrait, like the hair. I had it much longer than I have painted.

I even made a deviantID out of it for myself. :P

Making of "Siblings"

I am currently working on the third of the series of painting I have been doing. (The first two were King's Blacksmith and Forging).

Making of Siblings

It actually feels quite different, to go behind topics that are more playful and relaxed that the serious and dramatic ones I usually work on.

The mood seems to reflect back from the painting as I work on it, and sort of forms a feedback loop. :)

You can download the lineart from deviantART if you want to try coloring it. Please attribute back to the source if you choose to publish it.

To keep a close eye on the progress on this painting, watch the CGPainting.com thread - Siblings - I will be updating that regularly.

Forging

I am a craftsman - I am a blacksmith employed to the king of Giants. But at times, when I immerse myself in the heat from the heart of the mountains, I know nothing more than to create. Once they leave this cave, they may end up as instruments for violent means. But within these stone walls, they are my creations.

... one of the occasional journal entries of Derwog, the Giant King's court blacksmith.

I enjoyed doing this painting as a part of expanding and building on the Chaos And Order universe. I have an inkling that there will be more paintings on these characters in an attempt to build up their background and story.

King's Blacksmiths

A Giant blacksmith, sent by the king, on a quest to get to the bottom of odd happenings in a run down area of the city. His foster Human daughter is accompanying him.

A painting in the Chaos And Order setting/universe.

KalaaLog Tutorial Index Pages Updated

Took some time to go through and update my tutorial index pages at KalaaLog.com.

Main tutorial index page has been updated to point to links to the tutorials I wrote at KalaaLog.com to this day. It contains all the general drawing, tool guides, digital painting and vector illustration tutorials.

Similar to the Dragon Workshop page, I created a new page called Peacock Workshop that contains links to all the related tutorials.

This is quite a time consuming work - but I hope it helps readers find what they need. There are now officially 200 posts at KalaaLog.com.

Self Portrait - First Attempt

My first attempt at a self portrait.

Self Portrait by ~Vyoma on deviantART

My friends would disagree that I look exactly like this, but this was more an attempt to capture the familiarity than realism.

Kitar - Assassin

This is the second painting of The Assassin Order project. See the first painting - Anwun Assassin.

Kitar is a member of the assassins Oro Order. She has passed the rites of passage. Her modus operandi on missions are usually to assist her team mates with potions, but she has used the poisons of her own creations quite a few times.

I think I have gotten quite comfortable to this workflow in GIMP. I start off with a rough work and keep refining it to get a clean line art. Then, I do the color study separately and that really makes it easy to render the artwork.

Anwun - Assassin

Anwun - Assassin by ~Vyoma on deviantART

The first of this series, Anwun is an assassin of the Oro Order - an assassin guild. She has passed the rite of passage of the assassin order and has several successful jobs under her belt.

Done completely in GIMP 2.4 and Wacom Intuos3. Doing this particular piece I never saw GIMP as inferior to Photoshop for digital painting purposes.
