Sherlock Holmes - Movie

I am just back from watching the movie, Sherlock Holmes, a film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary character. A good movie, that is worth watching.

The cast includes Robert Dowey Jr (from Iron Man fame) playing Sherlock Holmes, Jude Law playing Dr.Watson and Rachel McAddams playing Irene Adler. Guy Ritchie (director of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch) has done a wonderful job of portraying the dark and tormented character of Sherlock Holmes, the chemistry between Sherlock and Watson, and eye candy of action that makes it a good watch.

The dark nature of the character in Arthur's works have always been there albeit an undertone in my opinion. Since his works have gone into public domain, I presume there have been a lot of adaptations have been done. But I think this movie gives a different portrayal of the character altogether - perhaps too street-fighterish for some people.

As I already said above, worth a watch and be on a lookout for a sequel.

The Forbidden Kindom

I have always been a sucker for martial arts movies. And the movie, The Forbidden Kingdom, comes as a nice watch. Even though not at the league of, Enter The Dragon, it does have good entertainment value.

The story is pretty straightforward, of a Traveler moving between from Earth's dimension to one where the lore of Monkey King exists.

Monkey King had been trapped as a stone statue due to deceit of the Jade warlord, and the only way it can be reversed is when the prophecy of the traveler returning his staff is fulfilled.

The cast has Jakie Chan and Jet Li as the Drunk Immortal and the Silent Monk, with the others filling into their roles nicely.

This falls under the 'must watch once' category, and is also worth getting the DVD for your collection - so you can watch it again on occasions.

Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who

Yesterday I watched Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who. A nice, 3d animated movie. It was worth the money.

I especially liked the characterizations, the environmental designs of the jungle and the Whoville. But sometimes I felt like they had put fur on everything because they had gotten so good at rendering fur.

This movie almost comes in the league of the Ice Age series. I say, it almost comes, because given a choice I would watch one of the Ice Age movies instead of Horton Hears a Who.

The movie is about an elephant that can hear the voices of the mayor of Whoville, which is a world on a speck. This gets him into lot of trouble, when he tries to find a safe place for the speck.

Bottomline: Watch the movie at least once.

Cloverfield

Cloverfield

Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

About a week back or so, I happened to stumble into a theater and watch Cloverfield. A must watch by my standards, if you are in the camp who like sci-fi movies. The documentary/amatuer camera approach gives it a Blair Witch effect.

If you have trouble with your eye, or your stomach throws up when you watch shacky video, I would suggest you avoid this movie. The full length is about people running from one danger or other, and the camera capturing their experience.

Dragon Wars

Yup. I was a bit hyped earlier on the movie - Dragon Wars.

Watched the movie. It did not impress me.

All the actors were trying to be too emotive. Most of the times you felt like slapping them and asking them, 'What is the big deal?'. Yeah - a huge serpant going around the city is a big deal, but I am not sure what - it did not cut it. It seemed to be a lot broken in terms of continuity, and most of the time, you did not relate with the characters. I do not even remember the male lead role's name. The story and background of the serpants trying to achieve dragon hood and path to heaven was too boring, and I had to hold myself from sleeping off. They could have done a better job at potraying the story.

The graphics was great, but that is the only good thing about the movie. And for that, here is Sketchcast:

If you do not watch the movie - you will not feel like you missed a lot. My opinion - of course.

Dragon Wars - Coming Soon on September 14

www.Dragon-Wars.com

I think I will be watching this movie. I like anything with dragons, and then, there is nothing like a monster movie.

Quote from press release:

The story begins with Ethan Kendrick, a TV reporter. While investigating a disaster that occurred at the Seven Palms Resort, he notices that the ground is turned up all around and forklifts have been tumbled over. It looks like a hurricane has gone by. Ethan notices the FBI investigator dusting off a specimen with a brush. It looks like a giant dinosaur fossil or scale. He videotapes it on his Handycam.

Back at CGNN Headquarters in downtown, Ethan examines the image of the scale. While he is looking at his computer screen, he has a flashback to when he was a boy. At an antique shop with his father, young Ethan meets a man named Jack. The old man tells him a story about giant serpents called Imoogi, a story that most have presumed to be merely a legend.

Five hundred years ago in ancient Korea, a baby girl was born with a gift called the Yuh Yi Joo. The Yuh Yi Joo will completely form inside her by the time she turns twenty. An Imoogi who possesses it can transform itself into a dragon. An old monk and his disciple are the only two who believe this legend and try to protect the Yuh Yi Joo bearing girl. Haram, the warrior who is charged with protecting her falls in love with her. Instead of sacrificing her to the Imoogi, the two lovers plunge to their deaths. Jack tells young Ethan that he is the old monk re-incarnated and that Ethan is the warrior.

The old man tells Ethan he must find a girl named Sarah, who bears the mark of a dragon on her shoulder. He is to take her to the Grand Cave on her twentieth birthday.

Ethan searches for this mysterious woman named Sarah. Meanwhile, the Evil Imoogi, named Buraki has appeared in Los Angeles with its army of foot soldiers and beasts. The FBI also connect the disaster and the scale to Sarah. They are all looking for Sarah .

Ethan must protect Sarah from the Imoogi and save the city from total destruction. Ethan must ultimately choose between love and destiny.

There is nothing more cool than the clash of the ancient and the modern city. And did I mention dragons?
