Search Insights on Drupal, Wordpress and Joomla

Seems like Drupal has a long way to go in terms of awareness.

Ubuntu One - Sync Problem

Ubuntu One

When I upgraded to Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10), I had a cursory glance over the Ubuntu One and did a setup. It basically was supposed to provide a syncing mechanism of your local files with storage in cloud (Ubuntu One servers).

What about Google Chrome for Linux?

I have been tweeting (follow me) my impatience to see Google Chrome for Linux for a while, but this post on them getting it ready for Mac, does make me voice my opinion as a blog entry.

Google, I believe does owe a lot of what it does technologically to Open Source, and I feel they are leaning towards being evil by not committing to deliver a Linux native port for Google Chrome.

Browser Statistics for KalaaLog.com

KalaaLog.com Browser Stats for Aug-2008

Seems like I have to eat my own words. I was sort of wondering why IE wouldn't die, and was figuring out the root cause for that trend. Looking the the August 2008 statistics for KalaaLog.com, it seems like there are more than 50% (56.86% to be exact) visitors to the site who use FireFox. IE takes a lesser share of 34.37%.

I even see a miniscule of visitors using Chrome. It is the new Open Source browser created by Google - I have not tried it yet because they do not have a Linux version yet.

May be the future is not as bleak for my web designer friends out there as I thought it would be.

Why will not IE die?

The day it does, many web designer and web developers will sigh a relief. Even with so many campaigns to people to change or upgrade from IE, there still is a large market share of people using IE6.

With the Windows users, swithching back and forth between Vista and XP, it is going to be a long way before the pie chart of the market share of browsers change.

Akismet Failing - Defensio Or Mollum?

I have been using Akisment for spam blocking here, and on other sites that I run or manage. Plugin/module is available for both Wordpress and for Drupal. It has been a great service for stopping spam on their tracks and saving a lot of my precious time. Lately though, I have seen an increasing number of spam slip through its filtering algorithms.  Since this is happening for all the Wordpress and Drupal sites, it cannot be something due to the sites themselves.

I think it is time to think about the other options.

There is Defensio. It has a Wordpress plugin but no Drupal module as of this date. But it seems to be pretty good, and my friend Mayank seems to be pretty pleased with Defensio.

Then there is Mollum, an endevour by Dries Buytaert (founder of Drupal) and Benjamin Schrauwen. It obviously has a module for Drupal, but does not yet have a plugin for Wordpress.

This is something I need to dig into a bit. Any suggestions are much appreciated. :)

A new theme for KalaaLog.com

KalaaLog.com which runs on Wordpress had a makeover. The theme used is the Tarski Theme which is elegant and minimalistic.

The only modification done is merging of the KalaaLog logo with the header and creating a custom header. After that, it was just a matter of shuffling with the widgests, and it is almost what I want. Smile

Orkut Flavoured Yogurt - Another Of Google's April First Prank

Orkut - Yogurt

Ha! Another of Google's April Fool's Day prank.

The number of things they have been doing has started to irk me. Thankfully, the day is soon to be over, into the Pacific.

Wordpress 2.5 Released

Well, Wordpress 2.5 has been finally released after all the fiasco of skipping 2.4 release, and also postponing 2.5 quite many times.

It has got some new features, like image gallery, multi-uploads, and what nots. Read the official release for more information. For a shorter perspective from a pro-blogger, read Mayank's commentary on the 2.5 release.

This post, like the other one on Drupal 6 release, is just my foot print on the ever growing web, on developments of OS projects that I use.

But here is something more.

To Upgrade Or Not To

If you are well versed with PHP, database and the likes, and like to be on the bleeding edge, go ahead and upgrade. It is a stable release, and even if there are glitches, you know how to jump across it.

On the other hand, if you are just plain lazy, or touch these PHP/MySQL stuff with only a ten feet pole, then hold on to your 2.3 Wordpress blogs for a while. Like a week to three weeks, because if there is any glitches, they should get fixed pretty quick.

If any of your blog is anywhere less than 2.3, then you would better have a good reason to stay on that version. My advice is, upgrade to atleast 2.3 - now!
