Apple - You Lost Me As Customer
by Vyoma
It has been a while since I decided not to use Apple products any more.
Here are some of the reasons I came to this decision:
- Their iTunes software required to sync/buy music and to make use of the iPod/iPhone Apps out there is not available on Linux. I hate it these days when someone forces me to dual boot into my Windows partition.
- iPod batteries suck. Not batteries themselves, because I do understand the concept of recharge cycles, but not able to replace it yourselves is really a bummer. And sending it in to Apple for a replacement will cost you almost half the price of the device, which is absurd. Read MG Siegler's view at The Short Lifespan Of The iPhone.
Now, I will be using the iPod I bought, until it dies. I am glad I bought an iPod Touch and not an iPhone. But I will not be buying anymore of Apple's products. I will not be buying them for myself, or as gifts for others.
Apple has lost me as a customer.

Personal Digital Gadgets - Converge or Diverge?
by VyomaI have been mulling over technological convergance and specifically my outlook on the same with respect to Personal Digital Gadgets.
No, I do not think that is an actual term. By Personal Digital Gadgets, I mean the music player, hand held communication device a.k.a mobile phone, cameras (still and video), gaming devices, and similar 'consumer gadgets'.
Looking at the gadgets I have owned, I have realized that I have a friction with the technological convergance that seems to be happening in this area. The first cell phone I had was a Nokia 3315, a variation of 3310 model for the Asian market. I used it for a good two years before taking another fancier model.
I do not even remember the model number - because inspite of more features, I just used it for making/receiving calls and for SMS (called 'texting' in US). During that time, I was seeing a lot of my collegues and friends craving for better models that served more than the purpose of calling and SMS. They wanted it to be their music player. They wanted it to serve as a camera - and the industry seems to heed to such a demand, providing ever increasing mega-pixel capability.
About two years back when I came to US, I realized that due to more constrained telephony market, my friends seemed to be constrained by the carrier on which cell phone model they could use. The difference between Indian and US telephony market is a different discussion all together. Anyway, I ended up having a BlackBerry 8700g. That is when I got introduced to the another concept of PDAs - where you used such devices to do rudimentary internet browsing, and email communication. But I ended up using it just for making and receiving calls.
Bottom line of my rant - do we really need all these different features crammed into a single device? In my opinion, a separate still camera provides better results than those pixelated images you glean out of a cell phone embeded camera. Isn't the music player (iPod, Sony, Sansa, Archos) better than what the cell phone can squeal out?
I would rather have separate devices that do their own job well. Perhaps I am more influenced by the *nix philosophy of having smaller programs that do only one thing, but do it well.

Got A Wester Digital 500 GB External Hard Drive
by Vyoma
I got the 500 GB external hard drive shipped to me this weekend. It is the Western Digital 500GB My Book Essential 2.0 - USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U5000N as described at Amazon.
With the tons of artwork, videos and other data I am creating, I have started to grow a bit paranoid with loss of that data. And that was the drive for this investment.
I don't think I will be using the auto sync feature because I would want some control over what goes and what does not into that drive. I basically needed a large chunk of storage where I can put copies of my works from my laptop. Now, all that remains is to organize my data, and back it up.

Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G Router
by VyomaAfter looking around for a wireless router, I got myself a Netgear Wireless-G Router.
It was a breeze setting up the network. As simple as, disconnecting the modem from my laptop, connecting it to the Netgear router, and that to my laptop, and running the setup wizard that came along with the product. After that, it let me setup the WiFi network too. I set it up with some security, and verified it with my iPod Touch. The whole process took me around 20 minutes, but most of the wait time was for my ISP to assign the dynamic IP to my modem after I had switched it off and then switched on.
The router, other than having capability to setup a WiFi network, has 4 points for having wired connections. It seems to be good enough for home use. I don't think it can be used for large networks in corporate settings. That would call for larger capacity routers.

Looking For Wireless Router
by VyomaSince my roomie vacated, I have been staying in an apartment with no WiFi. It is not really required as I usually work on my laptop with the wired connection to the modem, it would be convinient to have a WiFi so that I can work wireless around the house. And I would like to have WiFi connectivity for my iPod Touch.
Hence, I am now thinking of getting either a Netgear or Linksys Wireless G Router.

Why can I not have more than one birthday in a year?

More Horsepower?
by VyomaI just confirmed the hardware specs of my laptop:
- Processor: Intel Core 2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83 GHz 1.83 GHz
- RAM: 2046 MB
Just around few months back, I would have thought, that was about how much of processing power I could use.
But now, sitting for the video I captured as a part of tutorial (for CGPainting.com and KalaaLog.com) to process, I really wish I had more horse power.
I guess it is like money - there is never enough.

HackedGadgets.com
by VyomaOh boy. I would have been more than a happy chap if I had come across this blog when I was studying engineering.
Now, I do not have the energy or time to pursue this path along with others. But as a result of flashback, I sarted the Journey Of Code series at Splat.

Knowledge Nuggets From The Past
by VyomaYesterday was quite a demanding day as I was working on several articles for the two blogs I have, and at the end of the day, I thought that my brain would not give me anything more. It was totally drained.
But I was wrong.
I was retiring for the day, and then I had kind of flashbacks. It was the time I was doing my bachelors in MIT (Manipal) and also, I was giving classes for some juniors in another institute. I was specializing as an electronics and communication engineer, and the classes I was taking was for C programming. I had learnt C programming even before I had joined the engineering stream.
And in that class, there was this fellow, by the name Bhramanand - I know an odd name, even in India. It roughly meant 'Bliss'. Odd was his name, but it was more odd of him than the other students in asking questions. He would keep asking how somethings worked. How a particular functiton worked the way it did? When I answered that, supplying him with information on lower level function, he would come back with the same question. How did those things work?
I let out a sigh, and I knew I had to tell him all the story. He was from Computer Science background, and explaining him the electronics, I thought, would be hard. But as I began to explain him, right from the electron transfers at the transistor level, building up to gates, to ALU (arithimetic and logic units), and to processors, and to memory transfers and assembly level language, he caught on quite well.
Now I realize that it was not just his exceptional learning urge, or even the way I told the story, that made it easy to understand. The whole design was an evolution and it had followed patters. It is quite interesting and I think, I will spend some time the coming weeks on researching some more things, asking few friends who have remained in that field, and whip out some good set of articles to go in Splat.

Yellow Flower Using Tablet
by VyomaI just got my Wacom Intuos3 Tablet delivered to me yesterday. I was pretty excited by it and before even writing a review on it, I had to work on a quick digital painting.
Check it out at: Yellow Flower
