When Martin at Community Spark started "Building a new community", I thought I would share my experiences on CGPainting.com as and when he posts something it that series. I did so, on choosing a niche. Now he has another article on Choosing a domain name.
He has explained step by step on how you can choose a domain name:
- Brainstorm the concept of the website
- Search through storm of the rainbow
- Decide on your domain extension
- Be prepared to negotiate
- Be sensible
I had to go through only the first three steps, because I decide on a domain name that was not registered.
Step One: Brainstorm the concept of the website
The website would be a community for digital painting and computer graphics ethusiasts and professionals. Brainstorming for keywords, I got a huge list. Few among those were: "digital", "painting", "cg", "computer graphics", "art", "pro", and so on.
Step Two: Search through the storm for the rainbow
I used a online service, BustAName.com for helping me out with this. Just put in one or two keywords of choice, and start playing around with its options - you are bound to find something that catches your eye.
Step Three: Decide on your domain extension
What TLD do I choose? A .com of course. I want CGPainting.com to be a place where anyone could feel at home. And BustAName pointed out that CGPainting.com was available.
That is how I chose CGPainting.com for - well CGPainting.com.
I did not need to take further steps but I would suggest you do read Martin's article - it is a good read.
